Black and White Landscape

A wet Spring, sudden squalls of rain,

Grey cloud louring.

Chalk-white farms and rusty barns,

Pale light gleaming.

Charcoal-black the painted beams,

Stark contrasting.

Pear tree lean their blossoms to the wind,

Snowflakes falling.

Silver birch trees shed their bark,

Slowly curling.

White foals along the levelled hedge,

Run, clip clopping.

Cows in line, patched black on white,

Come home for milking.

Welsh cattle stand in sober black,

Like mourners waiting.

Rainbows wait in watery sun,

Dark earth steaming.

Strong gusts will blow the gulls about,

White wings flashing.
